Conservation area appraisals
We have a programme of conservation area appraisals in Uttlesford.
They are used to:
- help us make decisions on planning applications in conservation areas
- recommend amendments
- set out conservation management proposals for the area
They also form background documents informing the production of local plans.
Recently approved appraisals
The Smiths Green Conservation Area Appraisal and Management Plan was approved by Cabinet on 2 November 2023.
Many appraisals recommend some management proposals. This could include recommendations for changes to the boundary, proposals for repairs or identifying buildings that might be added to the local heritage list.
Their purpose is to:
- assess whether the existing planning controls are adequate to protect the character of the area, and if not, to recommend additional controls such as Article 4 directions
- encourage building repairs and alterations that are sympathetic to the style and character of the buildings in the area
